Karen Thompson stands as a pivotal figure in both the gay rights and disability rights movements. In her struggle to give her partner, Sharon Kowalski, better rehabilitative care after a life-altering car accident, Ms. Thompson faced persistent sexual orientation discrimination from her partner's family and medical providers. When Ms. Thompson took her battle to court, she was forced to deal with prejudices and stereotypes about gays and lesbians. It was only after her third attempt years later that she prevailed in her to quest to seek guardianship of her partner. Ms. Weisberg's introduction outlines how Ms. Thompson's story turned from one of personal tragedy to courageous social and legal activism.
